Work emails, checked with the mail server before you send.
MagpieCRM works out a person's likely work address from their name and company domain, then asks the company's mail server whether that mailbox exists. No email is sent. By default only addresses the server confirms are handed over, so your first campaign doesn't start with a pile of bounces.

How it works
From a name to a checked address.
Build the guesses
From the person's name and their company's domain, MagpieCRM builds the likely addresses, such as first.last@ and flast@. Once a format works at a company, it's tried first for the next person there.
Ask the mail server
Each guess is checked with the company's mail server, which says whether the mailbox exists. The check stops before any message is sent.
Stop early
It stops at the first confirmed address, after 6 guesses, or when the server won't give a clear answer twice in a row.
Mark the result
Each address is marked Verified, Format confirmed, Catch-all, Risky, Unverified or Not found, with the reason shown when it's withheld.

Verification runs whenever you reveal an email or save people from prospect search.
Verified only, by default
"Only give verified emails" is on from the start. Catch-all, risky and unconfirmed guesses are withheld, with the reason.
Reveal one person
Reveal finds and checks one person's address without saving them. If you save them later, the result is reused.
Find while saving
Save people from prospect search to a list and their emails are found and verified as they're saved. Large saves carry on in the background.
Hide the unverifiable
People whose email can't be verified are left out of search results by default, and the search keeps looking to fill the page.
Dead ends remembered
When a lookup fails for a reason a retry won't change, the person is remembered for 90 days as a one-way hash, so later searches skip them.
Opt-outs respected
Anyone who has opted out of prospecting can't be revealed or saved. Reveal just says their email isn't available.
Sending to guesses
Unconfirmed addresses go out in a careful first batch.
Some companies' mail servers accept every address, so nothing there can be confirmed. Their format is often still clear, and you can choose to hand those addresses over, marked Format confirmed. When a campaign includes them, they don't all go out at once. The numbers below are the defaults.
- Confirmed addresses, and contacts you added yourself, send as usual
- Up to 50 unconfirmed addresses go out with them in a first batch
- The rest wait at least an hour, until that batch's bounces are in
- If more than 2% of the first batch bounces, the rest aren't sent
- You can still choose Send anyway, or send them now without waiting
Cloud or self-hosted
Where the checks run.
Checking an address means connecting to someone else's mail server. Do it from the wrong IP, too fast, or from your own domain, and you end up on a blocklist. Self-hosted, see the proxy guide.

MagpieCRM is early access software, at version 0.9.23. So you know before you start:
- Contacts you import from a file aren't verified. Only addresses found in MagpieCRM are checked.
- On a self-hosted copy, the verification rate-limit counters start again from zero when the app restarts.
FAQ
Questions, answered.
Does verifying an address send an email?
No. MagpieCRM asks the company's mail server whether the mailbox exists and stops before any message is sent. The person never sees the check.
What is a catch-all address?
Some mail servers accept every address, real or not, so none can be confirmed. MagpieCRM marks these Catch-all and withholds them by default. If you choose to hand over addresses whose format is confirmed, campaigns send them in a small first batch and hold the rest until the bounces are in.
What does a verified email cost?
On Magpie Cloud, each verified email revealed uses 2 prospect credits, at £0.007 each. Self-hosted, verification is free, but you run the verification server and any proxies yourself.
Why not verify from my own server?
Most cloud providers block outbound port 25, which verification needs, and mail servers are quick to blocklist IPs that check a lot of addresses. On Magpie Cloud, checks run from our own pool of IPs and our own domain, never yours, and the IPs are checked against blocklists every 6 hours.
